A redescription of Antispastis clarkei Pastrana (Lepidoptera, Glyphipterigidae) immature stages, with notes on the life history and phylogenetic placement of the genus Rev. Bras. entomol.
Moreira,Gilson R.P.; Brito,Rosângela; Isaias,Rosy M.S.; Silveira Jr,JorgeL.; Gonçalves,Gislene L..
Abstract Antispastis Meyrick, 1926 is a poorly known genus of leaf-mining micromoths endemic to the Neotropics, with still uncertain taxonomic position within the Yponomeutoidea. In the present study, the egg, larva and pupa of A. clarkei Pastrana, previously known only from Argentina, are described and illustrated with the aid of optical and scanning electron microscopy. Data on life history, including histology of the mine, are also provided. Family placement of the genus is reassessed based on comparison of morphology and DNA sequences with closely related lineages. The larvae form blotch mines on the upper surface of Solanum L. (Solanaceae) leaves, feeding on palisade parenchyma in all instars. Pupation occurs outside the mine, in an inverted...

A revision of Neodiplothele (Araneae: Mygalomorphae: Barychelidae) Rev. Bras. Zool.
Gonzalez-Filho,Hector M.O.; Lucas,Sylvia M.; Brescovit,Antonio D..
The Neotropical Sasoninae Neodiplothele Mello-Leitão, 1917 is revised and now includes eight species. Neodiplothele can be distinguished from other Sasoninae by the absence of the posterior median spinnerets and differs Neotropical relatives as Cosmopelma by the absence of cuspules on coxae of leg I and Paracenobiopelma by the absence of cuspules on the labium. The male of N. irregularis Mello-Leitão, 1917 and N. picta Vellard, 1924 are described and illustrated for the first time. Neodiplothele leonardosi Mello-Leitão, 1939 is considered a junior synonym of N. irregularis. Five new species are described from Brazil: N. aureus sp. nov. from the states of Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba, and Minas Gerais, N. itabaiana sp. nov. from Sergipe, N. martinsi...

Another color morph of Sporophila Seedeater from the capuchinos group (Aves, Emberizidae) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Repenning,Márcio; Rovedder,Cristiano E.; Fontana,Carla S..
The genus Sporophila (Cabanis, 1844) unites about 30 species of small seedeaters that predominantly inhabit open or semi-open areas in the Neotropical region. The taxonomy of this group is based on morphological studies from collected male specimens. The dynamic spatial and temporal variation in the male plumage and lack of knowledge of their vocalizations make it difficult to properly diagnose some species even today, so these two aspects account for the existing taxonomic dilemmas involving Sporophila. During a four-year field study, we investigated the natural history of a breeding population of Sporophila melanogaster (Pelzeln, 1870). This is an endemic species in Brazil, which reproduces in the high-altitude grasslands of the Atlantic Forest biome. We...

Aspects of reproduction and sexual dimorphism of Lygophis flavifrenatus (Dipsadidae: Xenodontinae) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Quintela,Fernando Marques; Loebmann,Daniel.
ABSTRACT Lygophis flavifrenatus Cope, 1862 is a terrestrial dispsadid distributed in subtropical Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Argentina. Herein, we present data on sexual dimorphism and reproductive biology of this very poorly studied species. A total of 108 specimens (55 females, 50 males, three hatchlings with unidentified sex) from Brazilian states of Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and Mato Grosso do Sul were analyzed. Sexual dimorphism by size, body dimensions (tail length, head length, head width) and a number of ventral and subcaudal scales is not well marked in the species. Mature females attain the greater size and have a higher number of ventral scales than mature males. Mature males, in turn, presented longer tail, longer and wider head and...

Brazilian herbaria: an overview Acta Botanica
Gasper,André Luís de; Stehmann,João Renato; Roque,Nádia; Bigio,Narcísio C.; Sartori,Ângela Lúcia Bagnatori; Grittz,Guilherme Salgado.
ABSTRACT Herbaria represent irreplaceable repositories of biodiversity and are used to answer questions about conservation, ecology, systematics, and other sciences. In this sense, we characterize the infrastructure, human resources, and idiosyncrasies of Brazilian herbaria. To achieve this goal, curators were sent a structured and standardized questionnaire to gather information about herbaria. The Brazilian Herbaria Network listed 216 active herbaria in the year 2018, of which 139 answered the questionnaire. These herbaria hold 6,741,469 samples in their collections and more than 39,000 type samples. Most herbaria are in federal universities (40.28 %). Only 24 % of the curators considered that their herbarium is valued by their institutions and 52 %...

Colony cycle of the social wasp Mischocyttarus consimilis Zikán (Hymenoptera, Vespidae) Rev. Bras. entomol.
Torres,Viviana O.; Montagna,Thiago S.; Fernandes,Wedson D.; Antonialli-Junior,William F..
Colony cycle of the social wasp Mischocyttarus consimilis Zikán (Hymenoptera, Vespidae). This study describes some aspects of the colony cycle of the Neotropical social wasp Mischocyttarus consimilis, from data obtained under field conditions. Our results showed that the colony cycle in M. consimilis is annual and asynchronous in relation to the months of the year. The colonies remained active for approximately eight months. Most of the abandonments were associated with natural causes, and were most frequent in the pre-emergence stage. The nests were constructed preferentially in man-made structures, especially in sites protected from direct sunlight and rain. Colony foundation was either by haplometrosis or pleometrosis, being the first form predominant.

Composition and natural history of a Cerrado snake assemblage at Itirapina, São Paulo state, southeastern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Sawaya,Ricardo Jannini; Marques,Otavio Augusto Vuolo; Martins,Marcio.
Neotropical snake assemblages present high species richness and complex structures. The Cerrado is the second largest biome in Brazil, and was included among the 25 World's biodiversity hotspots. In southeastern Brazil, the remnant Cerrado areas have suffered intense destruction, and presently less than 2% of Cerrado natural vegetation remain in São Paulo state. Virtually no detailed study on Cerrado snakes was carried out in this region. The Itirapina region has one of the last well preserved remnants of open cerrado in São Paulo state. Our purpose in this work was the study of natural history and composition of the Cerrado snakes of Itirapina region. We performed an extensive field sampling combining six sampling methods in Estação Ecológica de Itirapina...

Diet, sexual dimorphism and reproduction of sympatric racers Philodryas aestiva and Philodryas patagoniensis from the coastal Brazilian Pampa Anais da ABC (AABC)
QUINTELA,FERNANDO M.; LOEBMANN,DANIEL.
Abstract: Herein we investigated diet, sexual dimorphism and reproductive biology of two sympatric congeneric species at the coastal Brazilian Pampa, Philodryas aestiva and P. patagoniensis. Analysis of the stomach content of the scansorial Philodryas aestiva revealed that it feeds mainly on Anura and small mammals, while it occasionally consumes Insecta, Squamata and Aves. The more terrestrial Philodryas patagoniensis presented a broader diet, composed mainly of Anura, Squamata and small mammals. Insecta and Actinopterygii were found in lower frequencies. In females of both species, snout-vent length was significantly larger than in males, while tail length/snout-vent length ratio was significantly higher in males. Males reach sexual maturity at smaller...

Feeding and social behavior of the piabanha, Brycon devillei (Castelnau, 1855) (Characidae: Bryconinae) in the wild, with a note on following behavior Neotropical Ichthyology
Azevedo,Pedro G; Melo,Rafael M. C; Young,Robert J..
Knowledge concerning the behavior of wild freshwater fishes in Brazil is restricted to a few studies, despite such studies being able to answer fundamental questions about conservation. Species of Brycon are amongst the most threatened in the Neotropics, particularly in southeast Brazil, due to anthropogenic activities in this region. This study investigated the feeding and social behaviors of the endangered fish, Brycon devillei in the Preto River, Jequitinhonha basin, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. Behavioral data were collected by snorkeling with four spatially separated groups (habituated), and direct observations of shoals were made using an underwater video camera (a total of 448 hours of observations). This species showed diverse tactics to obtain...

Feeding ecology in the small neotropical amphisbaenid Amphisbaena munoai (Amphisbaenidae) in southern Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Bernardo-Silva,Jorge S.; Von-Mühlen,Eduardo M.; Di-Bernardo,Marcos; Ketterl,Jochen.
We analyzed the alimentary tract of 66 specimens of Amphisbaena munoai Klappenbach, 1969 from the Serra do Sudeste, state of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil. Forty specimens (60.6%) had prey items in their gut. The diet consisted mainly of small invertebrate prey, such as termites, insect larvae and ants. The most abundant prey item was termites, found in 62.5% of the non empty stomachs. The high number of individual prey items in the majority of stomachs, the small size of the regular prey items, and the absence of gut content in specimens of A. munoai kept alive for about two days, indicate that this species forages very frequently. The predominance of fossorial prey items and the occasional records of nomadic ants lead us to suggest that A. munoai...

Feeding habits and morphometry of Iheringichthys labrosus (Lütken, 1874) in the Uruguay River (Uruguay) Neotropical Ichthyology
Masdeu,Malvina; Mello,Franco Teixeira-de; Loureiro,Marcelo; Arim,Matias.
Body size and diet of organisms are fundamental attributes which determine their ecology and natural history. Iheringichthys labrosus is one of the most common fish species of the Uruguay River. However, its natural history is poorly known and there is little information about its diet and interactions with other species. This paper describes the feeding habits of this species, relating feeding patterns to the size classes and morphometry of individuals and to the temporal variations. Fishes were captured in May and November of 2006 in three zones of the lower Uruguay River. A total of 101 stomach contents was analyzed (standard length: 60-224 mm). The species exhibited a broad feeding spectrum with most items belonging to the benthic community. We found...

Methodology for content enrichment Naturalis
Nederbragt, H.; Heerlien, M..
The STERNA project mainly focuses on enrichment of existing content of content holding organisations in the natural history domain. Therefore, developing a methodology on how to best integrate one’s content into the STERNA information space is an essential part of the project. This document is the outcome of that developing process. It describes in detail a six-step procedure on how to go about content selection, how to submit the necessary information to enable our technology providers to develop a domain-specific data model that incorporates all the required parts, and how to approach the actual content enrichment process. In addition, this document contains three annexes that focus on data modelling in STERNA, on relevant examples of content items in...

Natural history and population data of fishes in caves of the Serra do Ramalho karst area, Middle São Francisco basin, northeastern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Trajano,Eleonora; Secutti,Sandro; Bichuette,Maria Elina.
During the exploration and mapping of new caves in Serra do Ramalho karst area, southern Bahia state, cavers from the Grupo Bambuí de Pesquisas Espeleológicas - GBPE (Belo Horizonte) noticed the presence of troglomorphic catfishes (species with reduced eyes and/or melanic pigmentation), which we intensively investigated with regards to their ecology and behavior since 2005. Non-troglomorphic fishes regularly found in the studied caves were included in this investigation. We present here data on the natural history of two troglobitic (exclusively subterranean troglomorphic species) fishes - Rhamdia enfurnada Bichuette & Trajano, 2005 (Heptapteridae; Gruna do Enfurnado) and Trichomycterus undescribed species (Trichomycteridae; Lapa dos Peixes and...

Natural history of Ctenus medius Keyserling, 1891 (Araneae, Ctenidae) I: observations on habitats and the development of chromatic patterns BJB
ALMEIDA,C. E.; RAMOS,E. F.; GOUVÊA,E.; CARMO-SILVA,M. do; COSTA,J..
Ctenus medius Keyserling, 1891 is a common species in several spots of Mata Atlântica, however there is a great lack of studies in all aspects of its natural history. This work aims to elucidate aspects of ecotope preference compared to large spiders, and to provide data on the development of chromatic patterns during its life cycle. The observations on the behavior of C. medius were done in the campus of Centro Universitário de Barra Mansa (UBM) by means of observations and nocturnal collections using cap lamps. For observations on the development of chromatic patterns, spiderlings raised in laboratory, hatched from an oviposition of a female from campus of UBM, and others spiderlings collected in field were used. The field observations indicate that: C....

Nests of Oligoryzomys sp. and Holochilus brasiliensis (Rodentia, Cricetidae) in eastern Entre Ríos Province, Argentina Mastozool. neotrop.
Udrizar Sauthier,Walter O.; Abba,Agustín M.; Udrizar Sauthier,Daniel E..
We describe the structure and location of nests built by Oligoryzomys sp. and Holochilus brasiliensis in eastern Entre Ríos Province, Argentina. Nests were associated with water bodies. Nests of Oligoryzomys sp. averaged 18 cm length, 8 cm width, and 10 cm height and were found at elevated sites, while nests of H. brasiliensis were a few centimetres above water surface and had an ellipsoid shape with a mean size of 22.5 cm length, 13 cm width, and 18.7 cm height. A seasonal nest building pattern was observed that might indicate that these species construct their nests during spring and summer for breeding. Knowing the biology of these potential pest species of economic and public health importance in a natural environment will help defining an effective...
